New
Cancer Center Expands Rural Health Care Services
February 2001
The
Adventist Health Care System and Scott & White celebrated the
opening of a new, 17,500 SF Cancer Center in January. The project
represents a progressive joint venture between two healthcare systems
located 20 miles apart. Constructed by the Metroplex Adventist Health
System in Killeen, Texas, the facility is staffed and managed by
Scott & White of Temple, Texas.
"This joint
venture brings the expertise and resources of a tertiary center
to a community hospital," said Ken Finch, President and CEO,
Metroplex Adventist Health System. "This facility will bring
state-of-the-art cancer treatment services to the people of our
community and the surrounding area of Central Texas."
The Cancer Center,
designed by the Austin-based architecture/engineering firm O'Connell
Robertson & Associates, comprises the first floor of a 3-story,
48,000 SF medical facility adjacent to the main entrance of Metroplex
Hospital in Killeen. The patient treatment areas include 14 chemotherapy
stations, a dual-energy linear accelerator and simulator, 8 exam
rooms and a patient education area. Support functions include a
pharmacy, physician offices, radiation therapy, technical areas
and a conference room. The chemotherapy treatment areas feature
large expanses of shaded glass, and natural light enhances interior
colors that create an environment supportive of healing. The Center
connects with the main floor of the hospital to facilitate access
to existing hospital services for patients and family.
O'Connell Robertson
& Associates, Inc. is an architecture/engineering firm which
has been designing and planning facilities in Austin and around
Texas for over 50 years. Project experience includes healthcare,
education, commercial, industrial and government facilities.
